Slip (dress) through the seasons

Keeping track of the days during these quaran-times is a lost cause. The months are slipping by and the seasons are changing around us. We’re currently in that in-between time in the Northeast where it can be 50 degrees one day and 80 the next. AKA it’s spring!

My shopping habits have been quite haphazard during these times. For one, shopping is exclusively online, for obvious reasons. Other reasons: I’m lacking the inspiration of street fashion and the need to purchase specific pieces. There are no weddings, parties, offices to go to. Similar to how I’ve been going through the stages of anxiety, my shopping habits having also been going through phases.

Phase 1: In the beginning of quarantine I was under the ignorant impression that it would only last a couple of weeks, a month max. I did quite a bit of spring clothes shopping and shocking to no one, I bought a few new pairs of sandals.

Phase 2: As time goes on, I’ve focused more on our current situation and sprucing up my leisurewear in hopes of making the days more bearable: sweats, leggings, tie-dye everything, gym equipment.

Phase 3: It’s become clear that we’re not going anywhere and summer will be spent at home. My most recent purchases have been an outdoor patio set, grill, and comfy T-shirt dresses.

Once I stopped living in denial and accepted our new reality, I realized I needed to define my own new normal by adapting old habits that brought me joy to create new habits to find joy:

Old habits:

  • Power Outfits

  • Going out to eat with friends

  • Teach dance classes

New habits:

  • Occasionally putting on makeup and jeans and taking a mirror selfie

  • Socially distanced hangs in the backyard

  • Livestreaming dance classes

With so much uncertainty, it’s time to focus on really smart purchases—things I really need or things that I get a ton of use out of. There’s nothing more reasonable than a dress that works for every season, and I’ve got the one! A slip dress is a classic that can be morphed into any season and can be made any level of casual or fancy with the right accessories. Knowing how much wear I’d get out of a slip dress, I didn’t want to settle for just any one. I searched for many moons and just about gave up when I stumbled on one by accident in Anthropologie at the mall (remember those?!)—one of the good things to come out of 2020 pre-lockdown! While I will have to continue to wait patiently for the world to heal, I styled my slip dress four different ways, one for each season:

Regardless of when we get the all clear to go out in public, I have a slip dress outfit ready to go! While my slip dress is sold out, I’ve collected a few amazing options that have all the making of an all-season dress. Click to shop each—most have many color options available!
